Biography

Ahmad Faraz was born on January 12, 1931, in Kohat, Khyber Pukhtoon Khawa, Pakistan, his actual name was Syed Ahmad Shah Ali.

He wrote under the pseudonym Faraz and is renowned for criticizing military rule and coup d’état in the country. Faraz was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan. In 2004, he returned to the Hilal-e-Imtiaz as a means of protest against the actions of the Musharraf regime. In 2008, he died in Islamabad and was posthumously awarded the Hilal-e-Pakistan for his contribution to poetry and Urdu literature. Faraz was born in Kohat and studied at Edwardes College, Peshawar, where he was influenced by poets Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Ali Sardar Jafri. His most famous works include Pas Andaaz, Sab Awazain Meri, Khuwab Gul, Janan Janan, and Ghazal Bahana Karoon. His poetry was popularized by singers such as Mehdi Hassan, Noor Jehan, Ghulam Ali, Pankaj Udhas, Jagjit Singh, and Runa Laila. He was also arrested for writing poems that criticized military rulers in Pakistan. After a fall in 2008, Faraz returned to his homeland and died later that year of kidney failure. He is remembered as one of the most influential modern Urdu poets of the last century.
